In the novel, the wealthy Westenra family rented a seaside vacation home in Whitby where they would spend the summers. Lucy Westenra invited her childhood friend, Wilhelmina Murray to spend the summers with her. The Russian sailing vessel The Demeter, which carried the coffin containing the body of the vampire Dracula sailed into Whitby Harbor. Dracula began stalking several people in the surrounding areas, ultimately seducing poor Lucy, turning her into one of the undead.

Points of Interest[]

Whitby Harbor
Located on the east cliffs of the coastal community, this was where the Russian sailing vessel, The Dmitri (or Demeter depending upon the version) drifted into port, depositing its one surviving occupant - a wolf. This wolf was actually the vampire Dracula who had killed the ship's captain and crew before running off from the ship.
Whitby Jail
Whitby Jail was a jail house operated out of the seaside town of Whitby. In the 1936 film Dracula's Daughter, the corporeal remains of Count Dracula and Renfield were brought to the jail and sealed behind a locked cell where they were guarded by a befuddled constable named Albert. Dracula's daughter, Marya Zeleksa, entered the jail and hypnotized Albert with her ring, enabling her to steal Dracula's body, leaving Renfield's body behind.
