Darren McGavin, born William Lyle Richardson, was an American film and television actor born in San Joaquin, California on May 7th, 1922. His first foray into the realm of the supernatural was the 1952 episode of Tales of Tomorrow entitled "The Duplicates". His first horror movie film role was playing a character named Fred in the 1961 movie Witchcraft. McGavin is best known however, for playing the part of snarky investigative reporter Carl Kolchak. Darren first played Kolchak in the 1972 television movie The Night Stalker. He reprised the role a year later in 1973's The Night Strangler telemovie. The films proved popular enough that McGavin's Kolchak received his own television series in 1974 called Kolchack: The Night Stalker. McGavin appeared in all twenty episodes of the series and served as executive producer on four of the episodes. McGavin had a prolific television career following the cancellation of Kolchak, but made only minor appearances in other horror-related works, appearing on episodes of Tales from the Darkside and Monsters. Darren McGavin passed away in Los Angeles, California on February 25th, 2006 at the age of 83.
