Biography[]
Vincent Brand was an actor, theater producer and showman who operated out of London, England in the latter half of the 19th century. He was in charge of the Grand Guignol Theatre in Soho. A spirited man, he held great affection for those under his charge, but was also quite cynical when it came to things that displeased him.
Vincent Brand came upon the Frankenstein Monster, who was wandering homeless throughout the streets of London. He was one of the few who was not horrified by the creature's severe facial scars, and even offered him a job as a stage hand at the theater. Since the creature did not have a proper name by which to go by, Brand gave him the name Caliban, taken from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. [1]
Caliban ultimately had an unfortunate encounter with one of the actresses at the theater named Maud Gunnerson. She complained that Caliban accosted her in her dressing room, which was an extremely colored version of the truth. However, it was enough for theatre's lead actor, Simon, also Maud's boyfriend, to demand Caliban's termination. Vincent Brand had little choice but to condede to their wishes and regretfully let Caliban go. [2]
