Crypt-Keeper

Crypt Keeper comic

The Crypt Keeper is a fictional ghoul and the host of the Tales from the Crypt magazine, film and television franchise. He was introduced in the pages of the Tales from the Crypt comic book series by EC Comics with issue #20, dated October-November, 1950. The first story presented in that issue was "The Thing from the Sea", written and illustrated by Al Feldstein. The character simultaneously appeared in Haunt of Fear #4 released with a November-December cover date. The Crypt Keeper was one of a triumvirate of GhouLunatics, which included the Old Witch and the Vault Keeper, who competed with one another as hosts for various stories throughout the series. The hosts were also seen in magazines such as The Haunt of Fear and The Vault of Horror. In the early EC days, the Crypt Keeper was presented as an eerie old man, with a penchant for rattling off off-color puns.

Vault-Keeper

Vault-Keeper

The Vault-Keeper is a fictional ghoul as well as a comic book character. He was a horror story host who appeared in titles published by EC Comics during the early 1950s. The Vault-Keeper introduced vignettes in the series The Vault of Horror, which was published bi-monthly from 1950 to 1955. The Vault-Keeper also appeared in issues of Tales from the Crypt. The Vault-Keeper was one of three such story hosts, collectively known as the GhouLunatics, which also includes the Crypt Keeper and the Old Witch. Nothing is known of the Vault-Keeper's origin or identity, save that he is one of the undead and often presents a more cheerful disposition than his colleagues. The Vault-Keeper and the Crypt Keeper often vied with one another for the affections of the Old Witch.

The Old Witch

Old Witch

The Old Witch is, as her name suggests, an elderly woman who is also a witch. She is a storyteller and horror tale host and one of three such beings that make up the collective group known as the GhouLunatics. The Old Witch was the host of the horror anthology comic book series The Haunt of Fear, which was published by EC Comics on a bi-monthly schedule from 1950 to 1954. Along with her fellow GhouLunatics, the Vault Keeper and the Crypt Keeper, she was also a co-host on the Tales from the Crypt magazine series. Despite her appearance, the Old Witch was the subject of the amorous affections of both the Crypt Keeper and the Vault Keeper. Like the others, she often interjected pun-filled commentary into her narrations, and could usually be seen hunched over a boiling cauldron. The origin of the Old Witch was recounted in the "A Little Stranger!" story from The Haunt of Fear #14, published July-August, 1952. The story reveals that she is the daughter of a vampire named Elicia, and a werewolf named Zorgo, who were hunted down and put to death, only to rise from their own graves to wed each other in a mausoleum and ultimately give birth to the Old Witch.
