Biography[]

Valentin worked as a house manager and personal assistant to wealthy stage illusionist Philip Swann and his wife Dorothea. When agents of Swann's former mentor - the occultist known as Nix began targeting him, Dorothea hired New York City private investigator Harry D'Amour to protect her husband's interests. Valentin was opposed to this and tried to bribe Harry to stay away from Dorothea was a large amount of money, but Harry turned it down.

Soon after, Philip Swann was seemingly killed during one of his acts when he failed to evade several swords that dropped down from a circular housing mounted above the stage. This was all a plot however, to divert those who wished him harm from concentrating their attention on Dorothea. Valentin was aware of the ruse and tried to keep Harry D'Amour away. Harry arrived at the Swann estate to speak with Dorothea, who insisted that he should avoid all contact with her. Harry physically brushed past him to meet with the illusionist's "widow". Harry later went to the church where Swann's body was being kept. Valentin again tried to keep him away, but Harry pressed onward, discovering that the body within the coffin was in fact fake. When Harry confronted Valentin on the matter, he confessed to knowing that his employer had in fact faked his death.

One of Philip Swann's enemies, a cultist named Butterfield, learned that Valentin knew the location of where his master, Nix, had been buried. He tortured Valentin at length to give up the location, forcing him to bring him to a spot in the desert. There, Butterfield made Valentin dig up the area until his master's remains could be unearthed. Once Nix's body was discovered, Butterfield finished Valentin off by stabbing him multiple times with his knives.
