Season One of True Blood premiered on HBO on Sunday, September 7th, 2008 at 10:00 pm. The season lasted twelve episodes with the finale airing on November 23rd, 2008. True Blood is based on the "Southern Vampire Mysteries" series of vampire novels by author Charlaine Harris. This season adapts the first book in the series, Dead Until Dark. The setting for the show is the fictional town of Bon Temps in Renard Parish, Louisiana. The title takes it's name from Tru-Blood - a synthetic blood substitute that enables vampires to sustain themselves without having to feed off of humans. As vampires are viably no longer a threat to humanity, they choose to "come out of the coffin", revealing their existence to the world. Not all vampires are satisfied with this Great Revelation however and prefer to maintain their centuries-long traditions. The main character of the series is Sookie Stackhouse, a twentysomething waitress who lives with her grandmother and works at Merlotte's Bar & Grill. One evening at work, she meets a vampire named Bill Compton and the two engage in an old-fashioned, albeit strange, courtship. Someone however, does not care for the idea of fraternization between humans and vampires as a serial killer begins targeting female vampire groupers, or, fangbangers.
