The Toxic Avenger is an American independent feature film of the super-hero fantasy and comedy genres with an emphasis on "gross-out" exploitation. It was directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman (as Samuel Weil) with a screenplay written by Kaufman and Joe Ritter. It was produced by Troma Entertainment and premiered in New York City, New York in May, 1984. It opened to limited theatrical release in the U.S. on April 11th, 1986. The premise of the film revolves around a socially awkward mop boy named Melvin Junko, who works at a health spa in the fictional Tromaville in New Jersey. After being bullied by the more athletic patrons of club, he falls out of a window into a vat of toxic chemicals, which transforms him into a muscular mutant. Guided by an instinctive need to destroy evil, the so-called "monster-hero" stalks his way across Tromaville dispensing his own brand of mop-water flavored justice one mutant footstep at a time.
