Tituba was a slave woman of either Indian or African ancestry who lived in the late 17th century. It is believed by some that she may have hailed from Barbados. She was the property of a man named Samuel Parris and lived in Danvers, Massachusetts. Tituba was a practitioner of the voodoo religion and played a key role in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. She was acquaintances of the women who were accused of witchcraft during the trials, but was never accused herself, though she did confess to having partaken in occult rituals and could perform rudimentary magics such as protective wards and such. Despite this confession, Tituba was never accused or brought to trial on charges of witchcraft.

A character from the FX Network television series American Horror Story named Queenie, who appeared in the season three serial, "Coven", claimed to be a descendant of Tituba. Whether this assertion was true or not is never confirmed.
