Thing T. Thing, usually known as just The Thing, or simply Thing, is a fictional sentient severed hand and a supporting character... uhh... err... extremity featured on the 1964 comedy series The Addams Family. Credited in the show only as "Itself", the Thing hand actually belonged to actor Ted Cassidy. It was introduced in the pilot episode of the series, "The Addams Family Goes to School", and made regular appearances throughout the course of the series.

Biography[]

The Thing is one of the more mysterious critters found in the Addams family home. A disembodied hand, the Thing possesses a mind of its own, but all of its motivations seem governed towards serving the Addams family. The Thing moves by walking along its fingertips and can traverse the entirety of the Addams estate by appearing from within a series of strategically placed boxes.

The Thing performs mundane tasks such as turning the pages of Lurch's music sheet while he's playing the organ, or shutting off a desk lamp after Morticia is done reading. [1]

The Thing was quite strong. Even though it was never properly anchored to anything, it could still perform various feats of strength, such as when it decisively scored a victory over Grandmama in an arm-wrestling competition. [2]

Notes & Trivia[]
