The Frighteners is an American-New Zealand co-produced feature film of the horror and comedy genres. It was directed by Peter Jackson with a screenplay written by Jackson and Fran Walsh. It was produced by Jackson's company, WingNut Films and distributed through Universal Pictures. It premiered theatrically in the United States on July 19th, 1996. The film stars Michael J. Fox as Frank Bannister - a widower who has developed the ability to see ghosts. With the help of some friendly spirits, Bannister makes a living as a ghost-chaser, but things turn dark when an evil presence emerges that possesses the power to destroy both the living and the dead.
