In fiction[]
Tarascon made an appearance in the opening scene from the 2023 film The Nun II. In September of 1956, a priest named Father Noiret prepares to conduct mass at his church. He sends a boy named Jacques down into the cellar to fetch a large bottle of communal wine. The boy does as instructed and when he returns the wine, notices an eeriness about a painting of Saint Lucy before observing a kick-ball rolling back to him of its own accord. Returning to the nave, Jacques and Father Noiret observe the container of Holy water beginning to boil. Valak the demon nun appears before them and levitates Father Noiret several feet into the air and then causes him to suddenly burst into flame.
A month later on October 5th, Cardinal Conroy visited a convent in Italy. He spoke with Sister Irene Palmer, a young girl who as a novitiate had investigated a case of demonic supernatural phenomena four years earlier, and asked her to investigate the case in Tarascon, as well as several other inexplicable deaths that were possibly related to the events in Tarascon.
Along with a slightly younger nun named Sister Debra, Sister Irene took a train to Tarascon. She tried to check into a room at the Hotel Tarascon, but the receptionist did not have any record of her reservation.
Walking the streets, Sister Irene saw a throng of school boys racing down the street. She recognized one of them as Jacques and stopped to question him. Jacques proved elusive however, and disappeared before she could press him about further about Father Noiret's death. At which point, Sister Irene experienced a psychic vision of Valak and fainted on the cobblestone streets.
She awakened the following morning on October 6th with Sister Debra leaning over her, taking care of her. Debra told Irene that she too had encountered Jacques, and from him, she acquired Father Noiret's rosary, which had a strange arcane symbol upon it. They decided to leave Tarascon and journey to the Palais des Papes in Avignon to consult with a librarian. [1]
