Notes & Trivia[]
- Tales from the Crypt was created by Steven Dodd. It is based on the original Tales from the Crypt comic magazine, which was published by EC Comics from 1950-1955. Most episodes of the series are adaptations of stories published in that title, as well as related books such as Haunt of Fear and Vault of Horror. The Tales from the Crypt television series, hosted by the Crypt Keeper, aired on HBO for seven seasons from 1989 to 1996.
- This episode is available on disc one of the Tales from the Crypt: The Complete First Season DVD.
- Actor John E. Coates is uncredited in this episode as the voice of the police officer.
- This is the first of three episodes of Tales from the Crypt directed by Robert Zemeckis. He also directs "Yellow" from season three, and "You, Murderer" from season six.
- This is the first episode of Tales from the Crypt written by Fred Dekker. He writes five episodes of the series in total. His next episode is "Only Sin Deep".
- This is the second time that a deranged Santa has appeared in a live-action Tales from the Crypt product. A crazy Klaus also appeared in the 1972 film version of Tales from the Crypt.
- Clips from this episode appear in the film Lethal Weapon 2. Actress Mary Ellen Trainor played a police psychiatrist named Stephanie Woods in that film. Both the film and this episode were released in 1989.
- In the credits of this episode, Joseph and Elizabeth Kamen are just referred to as husband and wife.
- Ya like axe murderers, eh? You can also check out Amanda Plummer slinging an axe in "Lover Come Hack to Me".
Allusions[]
- The title of this episode is taken from the second line from the poem The Night Before Christmas. This is the commonly accepted title, though the original title is actually A Visit from St. Nicholas by author Clement Clarke Moore. It was first published in 1837.
- A radio announcer issues a warning about the "Gaines County area". This is a reference to William Gaines, who was the publisher of EC Comics, which published the original Tales from the Crypt comic book series.

Quotes[]
- Crypt Keeper: Ho ho ho kiddies. Just your old pal The Cryptkeeper having a little fun. Why else would I be in this get up? Unless there was a clause in my contract. In fact I've got some Christmas goose for you, goosebumps that is. Yes indeed. A little terror chocked full of holiday fear. I mean cheer of course. So, get a gander in a yep yarn, that goes a little something like this. "'Twas the night before Christmas. And All through The House.
- Crypt Keeper: Well, how was that for a scream boys and ghouls? Oh, don't worry about little Carrie. This particular Santa preferred older women... in pieces, that is.
