Sylvia Hunter Derwent is a fictional character featured in the 1977 horror novel The Shining by author Stephen King. This is her only appearance, and she is only referenced as it pertains to the history of the Overlook Hotel.
Biography[]
Sylvia Hunter was a woman who married the eccentric industrialist and movie producer Horace M. Derwent. She married him in 1942 and they separated in 1948. Horace was the owner of the luxorious Overlook Hotel nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Following Derwent's passing, Sylvia became the owner of the hotel from 1967 until 1968, after which it fell under ownership of a board of directors for an investment company.
