Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is an American film of the horror/musical subgenre. It is based on the 1979 broadway production of the same name by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, which in turn was inspired by a series of Victorian era penny dreadful novels by James Malcolm Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest. This adaptation of the Sondheim musical was directed by Tim Burton and written by John Logan. It was produced by the Zanuck Company in association with Warner Bros. Pictures and DreamWorks SKG. The film features a cast of Burton's favorite recurring actors, not the least of which include Johnny Depp as the titular homicidal barber, Sweeney Todd. Other cast members include Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and Sacha Baron Cohen. The film was released theatrically in the United States on December 21st, 2007.
