"Sympathy for the Devil" is the first episode of season five of the American horror-themed television series Supernatural and is the 83rd episode of the series overall. The episode was directed by Robert Singer and written by series creator Eric Kripke. It first aired on the CW Network on Thursday, September 10th, 2009. Due to Sam Winchester's actions in destroying Lilith, Lucifer Morningstar is now loose on the planet Earth. The only hope the brothers have in stopping him is to find the sword of the Archangel Michael. The prophet Chuck gives them a clue as to where to find the sword, but it is the angel Zachariah who informs them that the sword is actually Dean, who must willingly allow Michael to use him as a vessel to lead the armies of Heaven against Satan. Bobby finds out what Sam has done and becomes possessed by a demon, only to suffer a grave injury. Castiel, having seemingly died, is resurrected by unknown forces and returns to help out the Winchester boys.

The series ran for fifteen seasons from 2005 to 2020, spanning a total of 326 episodes.
