Stuart "Stu" Macher is a fictional student, serial killer, and a character in the Scream franchise. He was introduced in the 1996 film Scream and was played by actor Matthew Lillard. He also appeared in the upcoming 2026 sequel, Scream 7 (in one form or another).
Biography[]
Stu is the boyfriend of Tatum Riley and also serves as the secondary antagonist of the film, revealed to be one of two Ghostface killers (along with his friend Billy Loomis) in the film's climax. Though insane, he is also shown to be very dim-witted as he begins to cry when he learns that Sidney Prescott has called the police on Stu and Billy, remarking that his dad is going to be so mad at him. This is likely due to the fact that he was pressured into joining Billy's killing spree without any sort of motivation.
Notes & Trivia[]
- Matthew Lillard revealed that initially, the idea was to have Stu survive his death and return in the third film, orchestrating murders while imprisoned. However, due to the Columbine massacre, this idea was scrapped and instead a new killer was created, revealed to have orchestrated the events of the first two Scream films. Kevin Williamson would later go on to use the concept of a serial killer orchestrating murders from prison in his television show, The Following.
- The scene of Stu being hit with the phone by Billy and his remark of "You fucking hit me with the phone, dick!" was improvised as actor Skeet Ulrich accidentally hit Lillard while filming with the phone.
