Samuel Hoffenstein's first work in the horror genre was co-writing the screenplay for the 1931 film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Percy Heath.

In 1943, Samuel Hoffenstein co-wrote the screenplay for the Universal Pictures film adapatation of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera along with Eric Taylor and John Jacoby.
