History[]
Saint Mary's Boarding School for Girls is a Catholic boarding school for young women. It is located in Aix-en-Provence in France. The structure itself is very old and use to be a monastery. Centuries ago, a monk named Jean-Paul Redar came upon a mystical relic, the Eyes of St. Lucy, which held great power for those of St. Lucy's family lineage and had the ability to dispel evil. The monk hid the relic beneath a flagstone in the chapel of the school.
At some point in its history, Saint Mary's ceased to be a monastery and was sold to a winery. It was later converted into a boarding school around the year 1946. During its time as a school, the chapel area was sealed off and was considered off limits.
By the Autumn of 1956, the headmistress of the school was a woman named Madame Laurent. One of the teachers was a thirty-something British woman named Kate. Her daughter Sophie lived at the school and attended class there. A Frenchman named Maurice Theriault worked at the school as a handyman. He became very close with Sophie, referring to her as "Captain" and often playing games with her, or giving her gifts.
The older girls at the school were quite cruel to Sophie, and often played tricks on her. The ringleader, Simone, feigned an apology to her for past offenses, and invited Sophie to play a game with them. Along with the others, they sneaked past the chained door into the chapel where they brought Sophie before a stained glass window depicting a goat. Simone told her that the Devil was always watching her through the eyes of the goat, and if the color of its eyes ever changed, the Devil would manifest and come for her. The girls locked Sophie inside the chapel, and she did in fact witness several startling visions. One of which was that of a demon nun known as Valak.
Sophie saw Valak a second time when she observed her mother Kate silently and mysteriously ascending the staircase in the tower. Sophie followed her, but when she opened the door, she saw Valak standing at the end of a long hallway that seemed like it was from another time and place. Valak's visage took the form of several crows and chased Sophie away.
Valak had used its demonic power to manipulate Maurice Theriault into doing its bidding. A fallen angel, Valak wanted the Eyes of St. Lucy for it believed that with this relic, it could reacquire its once angelic powers.
