Providence is best known as the birth place of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, or H. P. Lovecraft, a respected author of gothic horror during the 1920s and 30s. Novelist Jeffrey Grant Rice was born in Providence in 1944. Rice's work was adapted into the 1970s television movies The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler as well as the Kolchak: The Night Stalker television series.
