Renny Harlin, born Renny Lauri Mauritz Harjola, is a Finnish film director born in Riihimäki, Finland on March 15th, 1959. After graduating from film school, Renny began his own production company specializing in television commercials, many of which he directed himself.

In the US market, Renny made his film debut with the 1986 action movie Born American, which he both wrote and directed. In 1988, he directed the movie Prison starring future Prophecy and Texas Chainsaw Massacre actor Viggo Mortensen. His first work in the horror genre was on the fourth installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise entitled A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Like many directors, Renny liked to place his own personal stamp on the film. He made a cameo appearance in the film as a student and a poster for his previous work, Prison can be spotted in the background of a movie theater entrance.

Following A Nightmare on Elm Street, Renny directed a series of big-budget action films, most of which earned mediocre reviews such as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island and The Long Kiss Goodnight. Renny's next genre work was the 1999 film Deep Blue Sea; a film about genetically augmented sharks that run amok through a marine research facility.

In 2004, Renny was tapped to direct the fourth film in the Exorcist franchise, the prequel Exorcist: The Beginning. This was actually a retooled version of a previous prequel project entitled Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, directed by Paul Schrader. Harlin went back to the original cut and refilmed the entire movie, adding new characters and plot elements along the way.

In 2006, Renny Harlin directed The Covenant, a teen-drama about four young warlocks who become addicted to using the magical powers and strive to overcome the costly consequences of their actions.
