Re-Agent is a fictional chemical featured in the Re-Animator multimedia franchise. It is most widely recognized for its usage in the 1985 film adaptation of Re-Animator, but has also appeared in the movie's sequel projects, Bride of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator.

Description[]

Re-Agent is a chemical formula developed by a brilliant medical student named Herbert West. Distilled into a glowing green liquid, Re-Agent had the ability to reanimate dead skin tissue.

Herbert West first developed Re-Agent while taking classes at the University of Zurich. He experimented on one of the staff members named Doctor Gruber. How West chose to select Gruber as his test subject is unclear, but after giving him an injection of Re-Agent, the man suffered adverse physical trauma. His face became ashen and sunken in and he began screaming in agony.

Doctor Gruber's howls of pain alerted some of the nursing staff as well as two university policemen. They barged into Gruber's office where they found West hovering above the man who was still in the throes of massive pain. Gruber suffered a hemorrhage of some kind that caused his eyes to explode, and he fell down dead. The nurse accused West of killing him, but Herbert denied this, citing, "No I did not! I gave him life". [1]

West then relocated to Miskatonic University in the United States where he continued to work on his experiments with Re-Agent. He brought on fellow assistant Dan Cain and used Re-Agent to reanimate Cain's dead cat.

West later used Re-Agent on the school's dean, Alan Halsey as well as instructor that he despised, Doctor Carl Hill.

Usage and Effects[]

The Re-Agent is first loaded into a hypodermic syringe for administering. It is administered into a main artery, preferably one near the brain of the subject. Depending on how long the deceased has decomposed, the Re-Agent brings them back to life and gives them access to their basic motor functions. Able to move and walk to the extent of any possible injuries they suffered in life. If the deceased has been decomposing for too long, they are reduced to their primal base instincts attacking anyone it deems a threat to them. However if the body is "fresh" they are able to retain their memories upon returning. However so far each returned subject primative or intelligent suffers from constant agony, possibly due to feeling any injuries from death and/or rigor mortis setting in. If given a high enough dose the head of the deceased can survive independently from the body, should the head be removed from it. If the body of the deceased without it's head is injected it can also move independently. An overdose of the Re-Agent to the deceased has shown unpredictable effects. Such as either killing the Re-Animated through deterioration or causing every organ in their bodies to gain sentience.

While the Re-Agent is meant solely for the Re-Animation of dead tissue, it can also be used on the living. A diluted version of the Re-Agent works as an alternative sustenance as well as an alternative wake aid. As shown in a deleted scene where, with Dan's help, Herbert West injects the Re-Agent into his arm to keep him awake, energized and keep his brain sharp. However as amazing as the effect is, much like the deceased, it's not without side effects. In this case, an addiction to it followed by withdrawal symptoms, similar to that of a heroin dependency.
