A pumpkin is a large orange fruit of the gourd family. They are excellent for making pumpkin pies and can also be used for sport, such as pumpkin-chucking. During Halloween, it is tradition for children to carve faces into pumpkins, turning them into Jack-o'-lanterns.

In fiction[]

In the Pumpkinhead film series, a demon of vengeance can be summoned through an act of ritualism and is known by the name of Pumpkinhead. The name is derived from the fact that the demon is birthed in an embryonic state from a pumpkin, but quickly grows into a nine-foot monster.

In the Halloween film series, young Tommy Doyle had a pumpkin that he had brought to school for Halloween. A couple of bullies antagonized him, forcing him to fall over, smashing the pumpkin. Tommy's babysitter, Laurie Strode bought him a new pumpkin and together they carved a jack-o'-lantern. [1]

In the Peanuts comic strip series, Linus Van Pelt believes in a figure of folklore that he calls the Great Pumpkin. According to him, the Great Pumpkin is similar to Santa Claus in that he flies over a pumpkin patch every Halloween night and gives gifts to children who wait out in the pumpkin patch for him. A caveat of the myth is that he will only bestow favor upon a pumpkin patch that he deems the most sincere. The concept of the Great Pumpkin was also referenced in the title of the Supernatural episode, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester".

The Channel 68 1970s horror film anthology series hosted by Doctor Wolfenstein included a scene where Doctor Wolfenstein and his assistant were smashing pumpkins with large mallets. [2]

In the 2013 film short Jack Attack, a babysitter named Elizabeth shows a boy named Jack how to carve a pumpkin into a jack-o'-lantern. She roasts the pumpkin seeds a as a treat, but when they eat them, they find that a gourd grows inside their bodies at an accelerated rate until it explodes within them.
