Sam Loomis 001

Sam Loomis from Halloween.

A psychiatrist is a professional in the medical industry who studies and practices the science of psychiatry. They specialize in treating mental disorders and are legally allowed to prescribe medical treatment and conduct medical examinations. In short, they are there to listen and interpret the verbal diaper drippings of the whack-a-doo.

As the horror genre is replete with mentally deficient individuals (not just characters, but industry professionals as well), there is no shortage of shrinks making themselves available to take care of them.

In film, one of the most notable psychiatrists is Doctor Sam Loomis, who worked out of Smith's Grove Sanitarium. He had only one patient, but one was enough -- Michael Myers, the infamous William Shatner mask-wearing butt-kicker who has slashed his way through the Halloween film series for over three decades.

In the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series, the 1987 sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors took place at a mental health facility called Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital. Two of the staff members at Westin Hills who were psychiatrists were Doctor Elizabeth Simms and Doctor Neil Gordon. Simms was a stern and rigid psychiatrist who believed that the root of adolescent psychological trauma stemmed from "sex, drugs, and rock and roll", whereas Neil Gordon was a bit more progressive and was even willing (though reluctant) to use experimental medication to help his patients. It is possible that a man named Doctor Campbell may have also been a psychiatrist, though this is unclear. Campbell worked as a consultant at Westin Hills, and was known to work in D-Ward, which is where they kept patients suffering from chronic nightmares. [1]

On the TV series Poltergeist: The Legacy, the character of Rachel Corrigan was a psychiatrist, as well as a member of The Legacy.

The Netflix original streaming video series Hemlock Grove had a character named Norman Godfrey, who was a psychiatrist. One of his patients was named Francis Pullman, who had the misfortune of witnessing Christina Wendall transform into a rogue werewolf known as a vargulf.
