Providence is a metropolitan city located in Providence County and the capital of the US state of Rhode Island. It has a land area of 18.5 sq miles and a city area of 20.5 sq miles. The population of Providence, as per the 2010 census was 178,042 with a population density of 9,950/sq mi.
In terms of the horror genre, Providence is best known as the birth place of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, or H. P. Lovecraft, a respected author of gothic horror during the 1920s and 30s.
Novelist Jeffrey Grant Rice was born in Providence in 1944. Rice's work was adapted into the 1970s television movies The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler as well as the Kolchak: The Night Stalker television series.
