The movie stars Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther - a nine-year-old Estonian girl living in an orphanage. After Kate and John Coleman (played by Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) lose their third child to stillbirth, they decide to adopt. Although Esther presents herself as the picture-perfect image of politeness and gentleness, she harbors a dark secret - one that the Coleman's mute natural daughter Max learns about to her utter horror. Add an angsty brother, and a suspicious nun to the mix, and you've got a recipe for a psychotic child who is more than ready to kill.
