Matt Donovan is a fictional high school student and one of the main characters featured in the CW Network television series The Vampire Diaries. He is played by actor Zach Roerig.
Biography[]
Matt Donovan is a teenage student of Mystic Falls High School in the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. He is the younger brother of Vicki Donovan - a waitress at the Mystic Grill. Matt grew up with the Gilbert family and was a childhood friend of Elena Gilbert. As the two reached maturity, they began dating. Elena had mixed feelings for Matt romantically and felt as if their relationship was just a natural evolution of their lifelong friendship. Elena broke up with Matt just after her parents were killed in an automobile accident in May of 2009. Matt decided to give Elena some space to sort out her feelings, but he never gave up hope that they would one day get back together. (VD: Pilot)
Matt's hopes turned sour the following September when Elena became involved with a new student named Stefan Salvatore. Matt took an immediate dislike to Stefan, but tried to keep his emotions in check out of respect for Elena. He even told Stefan that he would always be there for Elena no matter what.
When Matt's sister Vicki became the victim of an apparent "animal attack", Matt kept steady vigil over her at the hospital. He asked her about what had happened, but Vicki whispered only a single word - vampire. (VD: The Night of the Comet)
Matt's dislike for Stefan softened some after Salvatore joined the school's football team. He also defended Jeremy Gilbert against the aggressive actions of his friend Tyler Lockwood. (VD: Friday Night Bites)
