Mary Reilly is a British fiction novel written by author Valerie Martin. It was published by Doubleday Publishing Group in hardcover and paperback print in 1990. The story takes place in the continuity of the The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which was originally authored by Robert Louis Stevenson and published in 1886. Valerie Martin's novel adds a new character to the mythos, Mary Reilly, who is a house maid in the employ of Doctor Henry Jekyll. Treated as a soft romance story, the tale explores the budding affection that Mary Reilly begins to develop for her employer. However, she quickly discovers that Jekyll has a mysterious "assistant", who is actually his physical alter ego - Edward Hyde. Martin's novel maintains the plot elements of Robert Louis Stevenson's work, while expanding on other details, adding a fresh perspective on a timeless classic.
