Margaret Brainard Hamilton was an American film actress born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 9th, 1902. Her career started in the early 1930s and she has appeared in more than one-hundred films. She is best known for her portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1939 MGM classic The Wizard of Oz.
In 1960, she appeared in William Castle's 13 Ghosts playing the role of Elaine Zacharides, housekeeper to the late Doctor Plato Zorba. She later went on to play Hester Frump, grandmother to Morticia Addams on three episodes of the quirky comedy series The Addams Family.
In 1973 she played Professor Crabwell in the television movie The Night Strangler, which was a sequel to the 1972 television pilot film The Night Stalker.
Margaret Hamilton died in Salisbury, Connecticut on May 16th, 1985 at the age of 82.
