"Mad Hettie" is a fictional witch and a recurring character featured in comic books published by DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint. She first appeared in Hellblazer #9 in September, 1988.
History[]
Hettie, most commonly known as Mad Hettie, was an English woman born sometime around the year 1741. She was trained as a Haruspex, which is one who is practiced in the art of divination by reading the entrails of animals that had been sacrificed. According to legend, Mad Hettie "hid her heart" from Death, thus enabling her to live far longer than the average human.
By the late 20th century, Hettie was living as a homeless tramp in London, England. As something of a local fixture, Mad Hettie was often seen making mad insane remarks such as how she once saw a spaceman in the automat. He gave her a gold pretzel, but she lost it.
Mad Hettie became an occasional acquaintance of Earth mage John Constantine. She found John Constantine at the Easy Diner in London. She warned him that Morpheus the Oneiromancer was back. John scoffed, citing such an idea as a fairy tale, but Hettie stood by her assertion, calling Constantine "a littel prick".
Mad Hettie paid some London youths five quid to acquire a dove for her, by plying it with rum raisins. The three girls determined that Hettie might have had more money. They were preparing to accost her, but Hettie used her magic to break one of their legs, and freeze her in place. She then warned the others to go off and leave her alone. Hettie then used a knife to sacrifice the dove as part of a magic ritual.
