The Lead Cenobite, colloquially referred to as Pinhead is the central antagonist from the Hellraiser film franchise. The character was created by author Clive Barker and first appeared in the 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart. Pinhead made his first film appearance in the 1987 film Hellraiser where he was played by Doug Bradley. In the first and second films in the series, Pinhead was presented as the enigmatic leader of a breed of demons known as Cenobites. Traditionally, demons actively seek to seduce or corrupt mortal beings, but in the case of the Cenobites, the process is actually in reverse. The Cenobites respond to those seeking the ultimate forbidden pleasures, and are summoned once an individual solves the riddle of the Lament Configuration, which takes the form of an ornate, cube-shaped puzzle box. In the third film in the franchise, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, it is revealed that Pinhead was once a mortal himself named Elliot Spencer. Pinhead's fourth appearance was in Hellraiser: Bloodline, which marked the final film in the series to be released theatrically. Pinhead appeared in five more sequels, albeit briefly, all of which were released direct-to-video. For the 2011 sequel, Hellraiser: Revelations, regular actor Doug Bradley refused to work on the project and the role of Pinhead was taken up by actor Stephan Smith Collins. The voice for the Lead Cenobite was provided by Fred Tatasciore. For the 2018 film Hellraiser: Judgment, the Lead Cenobite was played by actor Paul T. Taylor. A version of the Pinhead character, known as The Priest, appeared in the 2022 Hellraiser reboot film. This time around, the character is presented as arguably female and is played by actress Jamie Clayton. The character has also been featured in numerous comic book titles including Clive Barker's Hellraiser, Hellraiser/Nightbreed: Jihad and the short-lived Pinhead comic book series by Marvel Comics.
