Kappa Alpha Theta is an actual organization that has been fictionalized in various forms of media, including the horror genre. It served as the central backdrop of the 1986 slasher film Sorority House Massacre.
History[]
Kappa Alpha Theta is a women's fraternity, later referred to as a sorority by some sources, with international status that was founded in 1870. It was first established at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. It was founded by four female DePauw students, Alice Allen Brant, Bettie Locke Hamilton, Bettie Tipton Lindsey, and Hannah Fitch Shaw. It was the first women's fraternity at the school (then known as Asbury University), which had previously been a male only college up until 1867.
On campus house, located at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, was allegedly the sight of a spectral visitation. In 2017, one of the Theta sisters had agreed to babysit the younger daughter of one of the college professors. The sister left the child in an upstairs bedroom and allowed her to amuse herself with her mobile device. When she went back up later to retrieve her phone, she found that photographs had been taken of the sleeping child even though there was nobody else in the room. An image of an unknown female figure was also partially seen in the photographs. Years later, a student took note of lights flickering at intermittent levels without discernible cause. Upon the advice of a former student who used to stay in the room, the sisters refused to turn on the lights from that point onward. [1]
In fiction[]

The Kappa Alpha Theta sorority served as the central figures of the 1986 slasher film Sorority House Massacre. The sorority was based out of an unidentified college in Los Angeles, California. Notable students associated with the sorority included Beth Henkel, Linda Grant, Sara Mason, Tracy, Cindy, and Laura. The house mother at the sorority was a woman named Mrs. Lawrence.
Years earlier, the sorority house had been the home of the Henkel family. Bobby Henkel went insane and murdered both of his parents with an axe, as well as three of his four younger sisters. He tried to kill Beth Henkel, but she managed to survive, though she did have a scar on her upper right arm. Beth, who was a child at the time, was greatly traumatized and repressed the memory of the event.
In the ensuing years, the house was converted into a sorority house. Coincidentally, Beth became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, though she still retained no memory of having ever lived in the house. Beth also had a psychic connection with Bobby Henkel, who had been remanded to the Peligro Valley State Mental Hospital.
Bobby Henkel broke out of the mental hospital and returned "home" to finish what he started. On the night of his attack, most of the sorority sisters had left for Memorial Day weekend, leaving only a small handful of girls behind. The girls invited their boyfriends over for the evening, and that is when Bobby attacked. Brandishing a Buck 19 hunting knife, he stabbed a boy named Andy in the abdomen. He then attacked a girl named Tracy and her boyfriend Craig, who had been having sex in a tipi in the front yard of the sorority house. Slicing through the tipi, he stabbed Tracy twice in the chest, but Craig managed to run off.
Bobby then entered the house proper. He stabbed a boy named John in the back, who had fallen asleep on a downstairs couch. He then went upstairs and stabbed Sara Mason three times in the chest. Craig, Beth, and Linda tried to flee by way of a chain-link escape ladder, but Bobby went outside and stabbed Craig in the back while he was trying to hold the bottom of the ladder tight.
Bobby then went back inside the house to confront Linda and Beth. Linda attacked Bobby with a shove, but he was able to mete out a fatal blow to her back. Beth then got the upper hand over her brother by stabbing him through the back of his neck through the throat.
