The Island of Dr. Moreau is an American feature film of the adventure, science fiction and horror genres. It is based on the novel of the same name written in 1896 by author H.G. Wells. It is the third feature film to adapt Wells' story. The Island of Doctor Moreau has developed a reputation for having one of the most bizarre and nightmarish productions of any movie before or sense, ranging from everything from problematic directors, production costs, weather delays and not the least of which, conflicting egos amongst its main cast. Originally South African auteur director Richard Stanley was set to direct the movie, but after proving to be unreliable and on the verge of a mental breakdown, was released from the project and replaced with John Frankenheimer, who only agreed to complete the film in exchange for a three-picture deal with the studio. Richard Stanley's original script was reworked by Ron Hutchinson and the movie was released through New Line Cinema. After a grueling six-month on-site location shoot in Australia, The Island of Dr. Moreau was finally released to theaters on August 23rd, 1996 and was met with unfavorable critical feedback. Although originally slated to star Bruce Willis, James Woods and Rob Morrow, all three had to depart from the project. The final line-up consisted of David Thewlis as the film's main protagonist Edward Douglas, Marlon Brando as the eponymous Doctor Moreau, Val Kilmer in a supporting role as Montgomery and Fairuza Balk as Aissa. No one came away from this film with a smile on their face.
