The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a British television movie of the Gothic romance genre. It is not a horror movie, but cinematically, the story of the Hunchback does have its roots in the horror genre, going back to the original 1923 silent film version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame starring Lon Chaney. The television movie was directed by Alan Cooke with a screenplay written by Robert Muller based on the novel by Victor Hugo. It was produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation and first aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom on July 18th, 1977.
