Horror is a genre found within the greater speculative fiction family of media. The horror genre speaks to the most primal and basest of all emotions - fear. Fear can come in many wonderfully dark and glorious packages, but for most, it is the fear of death that drives us. Fear of pain is a good motivator as well. Nobody likes pain. Pain hurts. Horror stories present one or more key characters and trap them in a situation where their livelihood or that of those they love is threatened by a force beyond their control. The horror genre is as diverse and varied as any other genre and can be dissected into any number of smaller sub-genres. Media within the horror genre often includes entities that cannot or otherwise generally accepted to not exist in the real world such as demons, ghosts, vampires, witches, and werewolves. Horror themes may also extend into genres that are not horror at its base, but may include some fundamental traits that are classically considered to be of the horror genre such as witches covens or sparkly vampires. The most basic subgenres of horror are psychological horror and supernatural horror. From there, all other subgenres flow outward, with many crossing over into other subgenres. Different types of subgenres of horror fiction may include science fiction, comedy, predatory animal, psycho-thriller, alien monster, killer toys, killer clowns, haunted houses, natural disasters, unnatural disasters (surely you don't actually believe that Sharknados exist, do ya?), Gothic horror, apocalyptic horror, supernatural fantasy, ghost horror, vampire horror, zombie horror, and the list goes on. The horror genre exists in all manner of media including film, television, video games, novels, and comic books.
