A hockey mask is a type of sporting equipment used in hockey. It is worn by the goalie and protects his face from incoming hockey pucks.

In horror fiction however, the hockey mask has a bit more of a non-traditional use. In the 1982 psycho-thriller Alone in the Dark, the character of John "The Bleeder" Skagg dons a hockey mask and kills an innocent bystander in a New Jersey looting incident following a black-out.

In the Friday the 13th film series, undead mass murderer Jason Voorhees took one up as his trademark look back in Friday the 13th Part 3, and has worn some variation of a hockey mask ever since. Copycat killer Roy Burns from Friday the 13th: A New Beginning also donned a hockey mask, but his was noticeably different from that worn by Voorhees by virtue of its blue markings, whereas Jason's had red markings.

In the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th, a hockey mask was one of several items found inside of a barn owned by a man named Mister Garrett. Jason came into the barn where he murdered a pot-smoking farmhand named Donnie. After which, he picked up the hockey mask and began wearing it.
