By the early 1980s, Gary Pervier was a cantankerous alcoholic who was friends with a mechanic named Joe Camber.

Gary took note one day that Joe Camber's pet St. Bernard, Cujo had a bite on his nose and was looking rather ragged. He late spoke to Joe about the matter, at which time, the two made plans to go to Boston to take in a Red Sox game.

A few days later, Cujo appeared outside of Gary's house. Gary saw that the dog was rabid and tried to retreat back inside. Cujo lunged after him and smashed through the screen door. He took several vicious bites out of Gary's body, ultimately killing him.
