From Hell is an American feature film of the psychological thriller subgenre of horror. Inspired by actual events relating to the Jack the Ripper slayings of 1888 , the film is a loose adaptation of the From Hell comic book limited series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Eddie Campbell. The serialized version is itself inspired by the book Jack the Ripper: The Fina Solution by Stephen Knight, who popularized the concept known as the "royal conspiracy' as it relates to Jack the Ripper. The film was directed by brothers Albert and Allen Hughes with a screenplay written by Terry Hayes and Rafael Yglesias. It was produced by Underworld Pictures and Barrandov Studios and distributed through the Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival in Italy on September 8th, 2001. It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada on September 10th, 2001. It premiered in the United States on October 17th, 2001 and opened to national release on October 19th. The film stars Johnny Depp as British police investigator Frederick Abberline with Heather Graham as targeted Ripper victim Mary Kelly and Ian Holm as Sir William Gull.
