A Federal agent is someone who works as an agent for the United States government. This could be in the capacity of any number of government-licensed agencies including the F.B.I., the I.R.S., the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, the Department of the Treasury, etc.
Of special note are the characters of Sam and Dean Winchester of the CW Network television series Supernatural. To be clear, neither Sam nor Dean, are, or have ever been recognized agents of the Federal government. However, they have impersonated Federal agents on numerous occasions, often taking on humorous aliases taken from pop culture icons.
