"Eater" is the fifth episode of season one of the horror anthology series Fear Itself. The episode was directed by Re-Animator creator Stuart Gordon and written by Richard Chizmar and Johnathon Schaech based on a short story by Peter Crowther. It first aired on NBC on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008. The plot of the episode revolves around Danny Bannerman, a female rookie police officer from Chesterton, New York who is, among other things, an avid fan of horror fiction. She learns that a notorious cannibal serial killer named Duane Mellor has been brought to their small police station to be held overnight. Duane escapes however and takes on the physical persona of those he kills by ripping out their hearts and eating them. While struggling to stay alive, Danny has to distinguish between who her true peers are and who is the shape-shifting Eater.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • This episode is based upon the 2007 short "Eater", directed by Matt and Ross Duffer and written by Peter Crowther.
  • Danny Bannerman is found reading an issue of Death Dance magazine, which is likely an allusion to Cemetery Dance, an actual horror magazine established by screenwriter Richard Chizmar.
  • Several references are made to the character of Hannibal Lecter and the Silence of the Lambs film series in this episode. One character, Marty Steinwitz, even imitates Lecter's infamous line, "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti."
