"Father Matthews" is a fictional priest and a minor character featured on the Showtime television series Penny Dreadful. Played by actor Oliver Cotton, he appeared in the seventh episode of season one, "Possession".

Biography

Father Matthews was a Catholic Priest operating out of London, England in the latter half of the 19th century. In the year 1891, his services were called upon by Malcolm Murray and Ethan Chandler in the hopes that he would perform an exorcism on Vanessa Ives, who had been possessed by an ancient Egyptian deity named Amunet. Father Matthews refused to perform the exorcism, as such a rite was forbidden unless otherwise authorized by the Pope. However, he did agree to administer the Last Rites to Vanessa Ives.
