"Who's Smiling Now?"[]

Ernie attacks Buford King.
In 1993, Buford King is driving with his pregnant wife and young foster son Ernest Fairchild to a hospital. Something overcomes Buford and he crashes his vehicle into a bus, which violently throws his wife through the window into the side of a bus.
Thirteen years later, Ernest Fairchild visits his foster father in prison. He manages to smuggle in a broken shard of glass, which he uses to slash Buford's mouth open, then begins to stab him repeatedly before the guards restrain him. Miraculously, Buford survives.

Death is only the beginning.
Police learn that Ernest Fairchild had recently poisoned the water supply of the town of Lucretia, resulting in the deaths of 665 people. After serving time in the same prison where Buford is incarcerated, Ernest Fairchild is scheduled to be executed. It is said that he will be the youngest person ever executed in the state's history.
Fairchild's final wish is to wear his leather jacket and his Smiley button during the execution. Hordes of protesters and advocates gather outside the Widmark Maximum Security Prison and the event has erupted into a media frenzy. Fairchild is strapped into the electric chair and he stares out among the witnesses. In his view however, all he sees are the faces of twisted and demonic evil. The switch is thrown, but Ernest Fairchild does not die. He becomes... something else.
