Evan Rendell, Jr., better known by his nickname "Doctor Giggles", is a fictional mental patient, surgeon and serial killer. He is the main antagonist and titular character from the 1992 feature film Dr. Giggles. The character also appeared in a two-issue Dr. Giggles comic book limited series published by Dark Horse Comics. In the film, Evan Rendell was played by actor Larry Drake. Actor Nicholas Mastrandrea played young Evan Rendell, Jr. in flashback scenes from the year 1957.
Biography[]
Evan Rendell, Jr. was the son of surgeon Evan Rendell of the town of Moorehigh and grew up in the 1950s. In 1957, Evan's mother died from a heart condition, and his father (who lost his mind following his wife's death) used his knowledge of anatomy and experimental surgery in a bid to reanimate her by cutting out his patients' hearts to replace her "broken" one. Evan Jr. helped his father out in his experiments. The townsfolk of Moorehigh caught wind of this and raided Rendell's laboratory. Evan's father's was stoned to death, but Evan Jr. managed to escape. As he grew older, his diseased brain became obsessed with medical experimentation and continuing his father's work. Evan's penchant for laughing at the thought of violence earned him the nickname "Doctor Giggles".
In 1992, Evan escaped from a mental asylum and returned to Moorehigh to get revenge upon the people of the town. He broke into his father's old office to compile a list of names of prominent people, culled from old medical records.
Rendell's path of revenge led him to the home of teenager Jennifer Campbell. He discovered that Jennifer suffered from a heart condition similar to the one that took his mother's life, and decided to make Jennifer the object of his insane affection. He slaughtered several of Jennifer's friends, as well as a police officer and a woman named Tamara, who was the girlfriend of Jennifer's father, Tom Campbell. He attacked Tom as well, but he managed to survive.
Doctor Giggles and Jennifer Campbell played a game of cat and mouse at the town hospital. Giggles slipped on some spilled cleaning supplies, which gave Jennifer the chance to take him out using a pair of defibrillator paddles to electrocute him. She finished Rendell off by stabbing him in the chest with his own surgical instruments.
