The Eagle Hill Cemetery caretaker is the unofficial title referring to a minor character featured in the 1966-1971 Gothic daytime soap opera Dark Shadows. Played by actor Daniel F. Keyes, he was introduced in episode 154 in 1967 and made nine appearances in the series in total.

Biography[edit | edit source]

The caretaker was an elderly man whose real name is unknown. He worked the night shift at Eagle Hill Cemetery as it's groundskeeper. The old man was a superstitious individual and was convinced that "evil spirits" and the ghosts of the dead haunted the tombs within the gates of the cemetery. (DS 210) One one occasion, he happened upon the Collins family mausoleum shortly after vampire Barnabas Collins re-emerged in the year 1967. Though he was not privy to the exact nature of the events going on, the caretaker was aware that something supernatural had been taking place on those hallowed grounds.

Notes & Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Like many actors from Dark Shadows, Daniel Keyes also made appearances in the daytime soap opera Ryan's Hope. He played a judge in episodes 1378 and 1383.
  • Daniel Keyes' final performance as the caretaker was in episode 317. He was replaced by actor Peter Murphy who played the caretaker in 337 and 360. It is unclear whether this was intended to reflect the same individual or whether he was meant to be a different character entirely.
