Darren Malloy was a twenty-four year-old man who was dating a woman named Brooke Fenton. In September of 2009, Darren and Brooke were returning home from a rock concert and passing near the Mystic Falls city limits. Darren complained about the quality of the concert performance, comparing the musician to British folk/pop star James Blunt citing, "We already have a James Blunt".
While Darren continued to jokingly poke fun at the music, Brooke screamed as she pointed at a man standing in the middle of the dark road. Darren hit the man with his car and pulled off to the side of the road to check on him. The man he had struck was actually vampire Damon Salvatore, who had laid a trap for the motorists. Damon snatched Darren by the throat, drank his blood and then promptly killed him. After which, he meted out the same fate on Brooke Fenton.
Darren and Brooke's car was discovered early the following morning. Police sergeant Marc Price ruled their deaths as an animal attack.
The death of Darren Malloy were reported on WPKW-TV the following morning. An article about them also appeared in the Mystic Falls Daily. Zach Salvatore questioned his vampire "uncle" Stefan Salvatore about the deaths, believing that he may have been responsible. They were both unaware that Damon Salvatore had returned to Mystic Falls only a short time prior.
