Description[edit | edit source]

A corpse is a term used to describe a deceased human body. The term is taken from the Latin corpus, which means "body". In the medical profession, a corpse is often referred to as a cadaver. In medical schools, human cadavers are used to study dissection. Corpses may exist in various states of decomposition from the recently deceased to full desiccation. As the subject of a dead body is a principal component of most horror media, nearly all films, programs and books within the genre feature or contain examples of a corpse to some extent. The word has also been incorporated into titles in horror media such as House of 1000 Corpses.

In some instances, a body may be resuscitated, in which case the decedent is brought back to life. In most examples of this however, these reanimated corpses bear little semblance to a healthy human being and are often regarded as zombies.

A popular slang phrase used amongst teenagers is "Live hard, die young and leave a good looking corpse" (or any variation thereof). "Live Hard, Die Young, and Leave a Good Looking Corpse" was also used as the title of the 1990s vampire TV series Kindred: The Embraced.

A very curious corpse turned up in London, England in the late 1800s. This was the body of a vampire that had been killed by Sir Malcolm Murray. Beneath the skin of the creature was a secondary carapace covered with carvings of Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. [1]

Notes & Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Not to be confused with the phrase "Corps", which refers to a military unit such as the United States Marine Corps.
  • The line "...only parts of the corpse had been removed" from the 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was included as an audio sample in the song "One Big Crunch" by White Zombie.
