  • Ward Phillips' name may be derived from two possible sources. Charles Dexter Ward is the eponymous character featured in H.P. Lovecraft's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, written in 1927 and published in 1941. Phillips is H.P. Lovecraft's middle name.
  • Ward Phillips can be seen wearing a Miskatonic University sweater in two different scenes in this film. This fictional college first appeared in the short story, "Herbert West - Reanimator" in 1922. The location has also been featured in other Lovecraft works as well as the 1985 film adaptation, Re-Animator by director Stuart Gordon.

  • Lavinia Gardner finds a store-bought paperback copy of the Necronomicon, which is a fictional grimoire that has appeared in several Lovecraft horror stories, beginning with the 1924 story "The Hound". The Necronomicon also plays a major role in the Evil Dead film series.
  • Dunwich is a fictional Massachussetts town, though it shares a name with an actual English city. It is located in north central Massachusetts, and is the setting of the 1929 short story The Dunwich Horror. The story was adapted into a feature film in 1970 by director Daniel Haller, a television movie in 2008, directed by Leigh Scott, and a British film in 2010, which was written and directed by Colin Edwards.
  • Innsmouth first appeared in the 1922 fantasy story Celephaïs, though it is more popularily known as the primary setting of the 1936 story The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
  • Kingsport is another fictional Massachusetts town possibly located near, or bordering notable Lovecraft locales such as Dunwich, Innsmouth, and Arkham. It first appeared in The Terrible Old Man, published in Tryout in July, 1921.
  • Benny makes reference to having a female friend who lives in Aylesbury. Aylesbury is referenced in the Lovecraft poem Fungi from Yuggoth.
  • Elijah Wood and SpectreVision also produced the 2014 horror/comedy Cooties.
