Cenobites are a fictional classification of demon featured in the Hellraiser multimedia franchise. They are characterized by pale skin, bald heads with various physical deformities, ritualistic mutilations scars and/or piercings. They also have a keen fondness for leather. Cenobites play a major role in all of the Hellraiser films, but the one that stands out the most is the Lead Cenobite, whom fans have affectionately given the moniker, "Pinhead" (played by Doug Bradley). Multiple Cenobites are seen in all four of the theatrically released films, but when the franchise hit the direct-to-video market, their presence in the franchise was diminished.
Cenobites are described as explorers and seekers of the ultimate experiences in carnal sensation; Angels to some, demons to others. Most Cenobites are part of a hierarchy known as the Order of the Gash and are followers of the entity known as Leviathan. The Lead Cenobite serves under the title of Hell Priest and commands the actions of his followers. Cenobites were once mortal beings who, while seeking to unlock the mysteries of ultimate desire, succeeded in solving a riddle known as the Lament Configuration, which is achieved by discovering the configuration through a Lemarchand puzzle box. Solving the riddle of the box opens a gateway to Hell, and thus summons the Cenobites. In some cases, the Cenobites may simply destroy a human's physical vessel, consigning their soul to Hell, but in others, they may be selected to become Cenobites themselves. A creature known as the Engineer transmogrifies the individual through violent methods, stripping away their humanity, disfiguring their victims and often bonding their bodies with instruments of pain, such as nails, razor wire, barb wire, etc. The flesh of a newly made Cenobite is usually torn, distorted and mangled in such a way that no human could survive in such conditions while still in mortal form. Sadomasochists by nature, Cenobites are usually clad head to toe in black leather, though another aspect of the Order may prefer a complete outer redesign of flesh and bone.
