Synopsis[]
In the Australian Outback, a zombie infection has spread across the entire continent. A survivor named Andy takes his wife Kay and infant daughter Rosie down the river on an abandoned houseboat they had discovered. While scouting for supplies on a derelict boat, Kay is bitten by one of the infected, and only has forty-eight hours until she will succumb to the virus.
Getting to land, they find a car and try to drive to the mainland where they hope to find a hospital. However, they get into a car crash and Kay suffers another mortal injury. Andy is likewise bitten by one of the infected. Kay has been impaled by a branch from an uprooted tree and Andy is forced to finish her off. He then takes off on his own with baby Rosie.
Along his journey, Andy helps a miner named Vic who had become pinned by liquid tanks at a fracking site. After liberating Vic, Rosie and he are invited to his home, which he shares with a woman named Lorraine. Andy keeps the nature of his injury a secret. He discovers however, that Vic has been capturing and caging Aborigines and uses them as bait for the infected, which he then uses as target practice. When Vic learns that Andy is infected, he chains up inside of one of the cages with a young Aborigine girl named Thoomi.
Andy and Thoomi manage to escape, and they make their way back to Vic's house to get Rosie and the keys to Vic's truck. Vick awakens and chases after them. He fires his rifle, but Lorraine intercepts the bullet and dies. Andy and Thoomi run off with the baby.
They manage to avoid further attacks, but Andy is weakening. Thoomi takes him to the place where her infected father's body is kept inside the weave of a tree. Thoomi introduces Andy to some of the spiritual concepts of her people. She puts white paste on Andy and Rosie's face to mask them from the "ghosts" that are wandering the Outback.
Andy then encounters a family who has abandoned their caravan because the father is infected. The father outlines his intent to kill his family and himself, and offers Andy the two remaining bullets in the gun. Despite the feeling of horror and desperation growing within him, Andy does take up the gun after the man kills his family and then himself. Andy also has a second encounter with Vic in a tunnel. The two fight with one another, with each one suffering an abdominal gunshot wound from Andy's gun. Vic gets a hold of Rosie, but cannot bring himself to kill her. Andy grabs the baby and hobbles away.
Andy meets back up with Thoomi, who tells him that she will lead them to her people, who have magic medicine. Andy doesn't subscribe to Aborigine mysticism, but it makes little difference. His time is short. Before they get to Thoomi's people, Andy completely succumbs to the infection. Thoomi sprays some perfume that belonged to Andy's wife in front of his face, so that his final sensations will be that of a pleasant memory. A tribal elder runs him through with a spear. The baby is then take to the Aborigine camp where they will care for her.
