A caretaker is someone who manages the maintenance and upkeep of an estate, business or cemetery.
Dark Shadows[]
The caretaker was an elderly man whose real name is unknown. He worked the night shift at Eagle Hill Cemetery as it's groundskeeper. The old man was a superstitious individual and was convinced that "evil spirits" and the ghosts of the dead haunted the tombs within the gates of the cemetery. (DS 210) One one occasion, he happened upon the Collins family mausoleum shortly after vampire Barnabas Collins re-emerged in the year 1967. Though he was not privy to the exact nature of the events going on, the caretaker was aware that something supernatural had been taking place on those hallowed grounds.
Halloween[]
Halloween (1978)[]
The graveyard keeper told Doctor Loomis about the Charlie Bowles murder that took place in Russellville. He also brought him to the plot of Judith Myers only to discover that her tombstone had been stolen.
Halloween (2007)[]
Chester Chesterfield was the caretaker of Haddonfield Cemetery. He was greeted by Doctor Sam Loomis who asked him about the members of the Myers family who were buried here. Chester remembered Deborah Myers, mother of Michael Myers, and commented upon how difficult it must have been being labeled "Satan's mother". Both men came upon the desecrated grave of Deborah's oldest child Judith Myers. The headstone had been stolen and in its place rested the crucified remains of a small coyote.
The Shining[]
In the 1980 film The Shining, there are three caretakers of note who are featured or referenced. The chief among them is Jack Torrance, who becomes the seasonal caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He picks up the slack for Bill Watson - the regular caretaker, who is only briefly seen in the movie. The third caretaker is Watson's predecessor, Delbert Grady, who went insane and chopped up his wife and daughters before putting the business end of a shotgun into his mouth.
