Plot[]
A college-age girl named Shawna is walking home from a party in New Orleans, when she spies some vagrants attacking a homeless man. She shouts to scare them off, but one of them attacks her, biting her on the throat. She comes to the stark realization that she has been attacked by a vampire. Shawna confides in her gay Latino friend, Pedro, who doesn't initially believe her. Shawna theorizes that vampires are attacking homeless people and drug addicts, which leads her to check on her mother, who is a crack addict. When they find her, Shawna discovers that her mother Denise is now a vampire. Pedro and she fight her off, and Denise falls through a window into open daylight, which incinerates her.
Shawna is naturally distraught. After the funeral, and spending some time with her father, she seeks out an expert in vampire mythology. This leads her to a vampire fiction enthusiast group run by a nerdy white girl named Granya based out of an abandoned church. Granya gives her the basics on the rules governing vampire lifestyles.
Shawna and Pedro team up with a boy that Shawna likes named Chris. They track down the man who killed her mother, who is a homeless vampire as well. After interrogating him, they learn that his master is a man named Lefrak who lives in a big mansion in the French Quarter. Shawna then kills the homeless vampire by driving a stake through his heart.
Shawna, Pedro, Chris, and Granya arms themselves with containers of powdered garlic and stake out Lefrak's mansion. Shawna and Granya pose as prostitutes to gain access. While there, Shawn notices a man named Babineaux, whom she has seen before, preaching as an activist who is trying to save the Ombreaux Housing community. Shawna is taken to Lefrak's bedroom and he tries to use his vampire powers to seduce her. She resists the mental attack and manages to stake him through the chest, causing him to explode into a cloud of dust. Pedro and Chris meanwhile, raid the house and begin dousing Lefrak's vampire henchmen with garlic powder, which causes severe pain and burns. The three manage to get out, but they soon learn that Lefrak was not the true leader of the vampire coven. In fact, it was Babineaux, who was once a slave that lived in the mansion during the 19th century.
Shawna and her friends meet Tunde, who is a vampire who is sympathetic to their cause and the sworn enemy of Babineaux. Tunde tells them that he will finish what they have started. He leaves behind a trusted soldier named Yakubu to keep an eye on them.
Shawna convinces the others that they need to ditch Yakubu and go to the mansion to fight Babineaux. They put Yukubu down for the count with some garlic, then sneak off to the mansion. Granya decides to bail at this time. While Tunde and his other soldiers deal with Babineaux's vampires upstairs, Shawna, Pedro and Chris come in the back way through an old underground tunnel. They face more vampires, as well as Babineaux himself. Chris is knocked out, and Pedro is killed by the vampire horde. Babineaux tries to convince Shawna to join his ranks, but she shouts that she would rather die, then shoves a silver locket into Babineaux's mouth. As Babineaux chokes from the burning silver, Shawna takes up a wooden stake and finishes him off. A few days later, Shawna attends Pedro's funeral. She decides to take up Babineaux's role as an activist to save the Ombreaux. She returns home and hears a stern and repeated knocking at her door. When she answers, she is greeted by Pedro, who is now a vampire.
